ANNOUNCEMENT ON LOCAL ELECTIONS – Full Announcement PDF

Local 716 Election Committee consists of Barbara Buchsbaum, Jane Dixon and Sandy Estrada as approved by the membership at the General Membership Meeting on March 6, 2024 as per Article 8, Section 1 of the Bylaws. 

The Committee has elected Barbara Buchsbaum to serve as the Election Officer, and she can be contacted via email at electionofficer@cupe716.ca

Elections shall be conducted electronically, as per Article 8, Section 11 of the Local Bylaws:

Section 11

Election shall be conducted electronically by secret ballot.  The Executive Board shall arrange for one or more voting stations including a Union Hall, and polls shall be open at least five (5) working days. The online polls will open at least seven (7) days prior to the Annual General Meeting and remain open until midnight on the day preceding the Annual General Meeting.  The Executive shall arrange adequate notice to the membership at least seven (7) days prior to the voting day, with all pertinent information pertaining to the election. Please watch this space for more information and details about the upcoming election.

  1. Dates of Election

Electronic: The election is hereby set to begin electronically on June 5, 2024 at 9:00 am when ballots will be sent to all members who register to vote electronically. Voting will be open until June 11, 2024 at midnight and the results will be reported by the Election Committee at the General Membership Meeting on June 12, 2024.

Nominations were received at the special membership meeting held in the month of May.

NOTE: VOTER REGISTRATION WILL BE OPEN ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 29th, 2024 AND WILL CLOSE ON MONDAY, JUNE 10TH, 2024 at 5:00 PM.

Nominations are for the Negotiating Committee as follows:  four (4) members and one (1) alternate.

ARTICLE 1 – COMMITTEES AND DELEGATES

Section 1

The Negotiation Committee shall include:

  1. The President, Secretary, 2nd Vice President, and four (4) members, and one (1) alternate elected at the Annual General Meeting. Only those members in good standing shall be entitled to be nominated. The CUPE National Representative assigned to the Local shall be consulted at all stages from formulating proposals, through negotiations, to contract ratification by the membership.
  2. In the absence of an elected member, the alternate shall become a full member of the committee and inherit all duties there-in. The alternate would be required to attend meetings of the Local negotiating committee but would not be present when meeting with the employer.
  3. In the absence of the President, the 1st Vice-President would, if not elected to the Negotiating Committee, automatically become a member of the committee. (Article B.7.1)
  4. The elected members of the negotiation committee who begin negotiating a contract shall continue to the ratification of that contract.

  1. Get to know the Candidates

No later than May 23rd, 2024, the Elections Committee will circulate the names of all candidates qualified for and accepting nominations for election. The period between May 23rd, 2024 and the close of the election on June 11th, 2024 will be an opportunity for candidates to campaign and for the members to get to know them.

Candidate posters will be posted on the local’s website on a first-come, first-serve basis.
