Professional Development Days Placement

This is the school district’s Professional Development Days for the school year 2020-21. Most days are “common days” meaning, the whole district is doing professional development. There are a few select days for school based learning that individual schools have chosen. Make sure to visit SD38 Events page on the Portal. Also, check your work emails for upcoming information closer to the date.

A Message from Morneau Sheppel

This message is from the School District Benefits Administration regarding PEBT LTD eligibility and JEIS referrals Reminders. Please read carefully and contact them with any questions you may have.

As more unionized support staff may be considering a leave of absence due to COVID-19, please see the following reminders.

1. Unpaid LOA and LTD eligibility
A Member’s PEBT long term disability (LTD) coverage ends on the 32nd day of an unpaid leave of absence (LOA).
This means if a Member becomes disabled after this date while on unpaid leave, they would not be eligible for LTD benefits. The Member’s LTD coverage would restart only after they return to work, and complete the waiting period of three (3) consecutive months of active employment.
This applies only to an unpaid LOA, and does not apply if the Member is on paid leave, or is on maternity, paternity or compassionate care leave. The 32 days are calculated based on calendar days, not only working days, and summer months are excluded for 10 month workers.
Please advise Members of this before they take an unpaid LOA.

2. JEIS referrals
As per the attached memo, if a Member is self-isolating due to COVID-19 but is not injured or ill, then a Joint Early Intervention Services (JEIS) referral is not required. However, if the status of the Member’s health is unclear, or if the Member does not return to work following the expected isolation period, then please refer the Member to JEIS.

Are you interested in becoming a k̓ʷəməyɬəm volunteer?

As part of our district work towards the goals of our SD38 Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement, we would encourage all schools to have a volunteer k̓ʷəməyɬəm (meaning raise a child in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓) on staff.

This focuses on Goal #1 of our Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement, which reads Richmond’s students with Aboriginal ancestry will work toward a strong sense of belonging through pride in their cultural heritage. Students will be honoured for their stories, celebrated for their individual strengths, and supported throughout their learning journey.

The role is intended to increase a sense of belonging at school for students through connections to the greater school community. This role is voluntary, and is meant to complement the work of the Aboriginal Success team. The role is not curricular, or cultural in nature, and is focused on the relationships that students have in and with the school. While the role will depend on context, and is evolving, k̓ʷəməyɬəm will be a friendly face in the halls, and a person who provides encouragement or a safe space if necessary. The role can be filled by a teacher, support staff, or administrator.

The Season of Giving: Richmond Food Bank

Once again, CUPE716 made another financial donation to the Richmond Food Bank as voted on by the membership during the December Membership Meeting. This will help those in our community enjoy food on the table during the holiday season and beyond. The Richmond Food Bank is always looking for donations throughout the year.

President’s Report – 2020 Year End

To all CUPE 716 members,

On behalf of the executive I wish you all a joyful and restful holiday season. Winter break is almost here. Please take some time to rest and recuperate. It has been an unprecedented time not only in our work lives but our personal lives. Try to reflect on the positives. Words cannot capture the mixture of emotions and stress we have all been through.

Unfortunately the Government has not made mask wearing mandatory in schools. Wherever and whenever possible if you are able to, please wear a mask to help keep you and others safe. We continue to work diligently to keep you safe and advocate the district follow all safety protocols.

Let’s continue to support and be there for each other now more than ever. Report any unsafe conditions you see to your supervisor, your safety committee and your union. We are only strong when we are united together.

Enjoy some time away from work. Look after yourself and your loved ones.
